University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) [2] is an on campus engineering institute of Panjab University,[3]Chandigarh, India. It offers undergraduate (BE), postgraduate (dual degree BE+MBA, M.Tech degree) as well as doctoral courses. The Institute is granted funds from the central government to improve its infrastructure and facilities.[4] UIET has interactions and Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) with various Industry and Academia like Infosys (Campus Connect Program), IBM, IMTECH, Bharti Group (Bharti Chair for research), Sun Microsystems and more. The Institute also has a memorandum signed with University of Western Australia (UWA).[5]

Rankings

UIET is ranked #31 in the best engineering colleges in India ranking list by Outlook conducted in May 2011.[6] In the past, Mint C-Fore-2008 Survey Ranked UIET #40 in the 'Top 50 Government Colleges' in India.[7] Apart from the overall institute ranks, The Department of Biotechnology, UIET, was ranked #10 by Biospectrum India in the year 2007[8]

Campus

UIET is located in the southern campus of Panjab University,Sector 25, Chandigarh.[9] It has two academic blocks which include the labs, office as well as the lecture halls.In addition to this there are separate blocks for Mechanical labs and workshops, Campus is having ATM facility by State bank of India. The campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled, with dedicated internet access all over the campus.

Courses offered

UIET offers four year Bachelor of Engineering (BE) courses and five year integrated BE/Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses in Biotechnology, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering. Master of Engineering (ME) courses are offered in the same areas except Biotechnology Engineering and Electrical & Electronics Engineering.[10]

Admissions to Bachelor of Engineering courses are made through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).[11] Admissions to Master of Engineering courses are made through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examinations.

The Official student committees of the Institute are known as the 'UTECHNOS' Committees.[12] At present there are 8 such committees[13]:

Apart from the 'UTECHNOS' Committees there are various official student groups such as the 'OSMIUM'-The Theatre Group,[15] 'PopKorns' -the Dance Group,Mitra,Rotaract-UIET,etc. involved in specific student activities

Cultural and Technical Festivals

'Goonj' is the cultural festival, organized by the students of UIET every year. Events include quizzes, workshops, game Shows, informal events, fashion show (Glitterati), dance show (Groovz), Rock Night, Pronite, and a city level beauty peagant.[16][17] [18]

A number of conferences,events, competitions along with various workshops and lectures by eminent guests across the world are organized every year.[19][20][21][22] Some of the conferences include National Conference on Computing, Communication and Control(3C-2009),[23] National Conference on Advances in Mechanical Engineering(NCAME-2011),[24] etc.
